Senior leadership

A school's leadership team is often referred to as the SLT (Senior Leadership Team) or SMT (Senior Management Team). As the decision-making body, they're integral to a school's success and strategic direction.

As class teachers progress through their careers, additional responsibilities often become part of the job; whether it be school-wide or departmental. These opportunities facilitate more experience and allow class teachers to climb the ladder of career progression into middle management.

Depending on the size of the secondary school, a position with additional responsibility may come with a TLR payment (Teaching & Learning Responsibility). The weight of a TLR will depend on the scale of responsibility given, which is often determined by the importance placed on the role itself, size of school, department or phase.

Class teachers

Secondary school subject teacher

The role of a secondary school teacher has become more complex, as new teaching methods and resources have been introduced and developed. Over the course of the academic year, teachers are tasked with preparing pupils for qualifications and external examinations, whilst managing pupil behaviour, undertaking pastoral duties, and supporting children through academic and personal difficulties.

To ensure teaching standards are maintained, teachers undergo regular observations, participating in regular training through INSET and CPD, and contributing towards the training and development of trainee teachers and NQTs. The introduction and support of subject-specific teaching assistants have become a welcome addition to the classroom and have strengthened the focus on raising attainment, providing dedicated pupil support on a 1:1 and small group basis.

Secondary Early Career Teacher (ECT)

Secondary teachers are subject-specialists, so as an Early Career Teacher (ECT), ensuring your subject knowledge is strong and in-depth is key to your development throughout teacher training, as well as securing your first permanent post. As an ECT you should feel at ease teaching across Key Stage 3 and 4 (potentially Key Stage 5) and confident in dealing with challenges such as difficult behaviour.

Every school will be different with many factors contributing to your experience. Your journey to the school, lesson observation, and meeting your potential line manager and Head of Department can all impact your decision.

When preparing for your interview, be thorough. Get the basics right and have confidence in your ability. Schools are looking for ECTs with real potential, those who show promise and can add value to their team.

  • The term early career teacher (ECT) replaces newly qualified teacher (NQT).
  • The standard length of induction has been increased from one school year to two school years.
  • In addition to the 10% timetable reduction that ECTs receive in their first year of induction, ECTs will also receive a 5% timetable reduction in the second year of induction.
  • Schools are expected to deliver an induction period that is underpinned by the ECF – Early Career Framework. Appropriate bodies will have a role in checking that an ECF-based induction is in place.
  • The role of the mentor has been introduced. The mentor will have a key role in supporting the ECT during induction and is separate from the role of the induction tutor.
  • There will be two formal assessment points, one midway through induction, and one at the end of the induction period. These will be supported by regular progress reviews to monitor progress, to take place in each term where a formal assessment is not scheduled.

Teaching assistants

The role of a teaching assistant has developed over the years, placing more importance and emphasis on their responsibilities and impact. Being one of our Clarus Aspirations graduate teaching assistants is a testing yet rewarding position and responsibility supporting pupils in and out of class, working 1:1 / 2:1 and in small groups.

Clarus Education work in partnership with secondary schools across London to recruit the very best teaching assistants for pupils across the key stages and of all abilities that require academic support, from those of lower ability through to the gifted and talented.

All our positions are long-term and traditionally last the entire academic year. As an aspiring teacher, you will witness and experience the varied classroom dynamics that will assist and hopefully support you in your own professional development ahead of a PGCE, SCITT or Schools Direct.

Teaching assistants

Secondary schools can deploy their teaching assistants in either a broad, more general capacity or dedicated to a specific department, determined by your subject strength and degree. The traditionally known ‘core subjects’ are Maths, Science and English.

More recently, schools have placed greater interest in the humanities subjects and Modern Foreign Languages (MFL).

  • Key Stage 3 – Years 7 – 9 (Aged 11 – 14yrs)
  • Key Stage 4 – Years 10 & 11 (Aged 14 – 16yrs) – GCSE
  • Key Stage 5 – Years 12 & 13 (Aged 16 – 19yrs) – A-Level

The aim of general teaching assistants will be to mainly support across Key Stage 3 & 4. Subject-specific teaching assistants will support a subject across Key Stage 3, 4 & 5.

All teaching assistants will need to have a strong academic background, supported by confidence and a genuine interest in education and learning.

Back office and administrative

The operational support at any secondary school is fundamental to its smooth running. Within an environment that requires uncompromisingly high standards regarding security and vetting, the back office support and administrative staff in all secondary schools need to be organised, efficient, and alert.

Each secondary school is different, with varying demands in skillset across all positions within ‘Back Office and Administrative’. Our vacancies for these particular positions will highlight the particular qualifications and experience required to apply; whether it’s knowledge of SIMS or a CIPD qualification.
