1:1 Teaching Assistant – Year 1

Location: Westminster
Contract: Long term
Working pattern: 8:45am – 3:30pm
Start date: ASAP
Pay: £115 per day

About the role

We are seeking a calm, patient and resilient 1:1 Teaching Assistant to support a Year 1 pupil with speech and communication development.

The child is energetic and benefits from clear routines, consistent boundaries and positive, structured support. At times, he may spit or kick, so the successful candidate will need to remain composed, follow agreed behaviour and safety strategies, and respond consistently. He also has a warm and affectionate nature, and the right person will be able to build a trusting relationship with him while encouraging his communication, learning and independence.

You will work closely with the class teacher, SENCO and wider school team to provide consistent support throughout the school day.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide dedicated 1:1 support during lessons, play and daily routines.
  • Encourage the pupil’s speech, language and communication development.
  • Help him engage with classroom activities and access learning.
  • Use clear, positive communication and agreed support strategies.
  • Maintain consistent expectations, routines and boundaries.
  • Support emotional regulation and positive behaviour.
  • Respond calmly and safely to challenging behaviour, following school guidance.
  • Encourage independence, confidence and positive relationships.
  • Share observations about progress and wellbeing with the class teacher and SENCO.
  • Follow safeguarding, health and safety and confidentiality procedures.

About you

The ideal candidate will:

  • Have experience supporting primary-aged children, ideally in a 1:1 or SEN role.
  • Be patient, nurturing, confident and resilient.
  • Be able to set clear, consistent boundaries with warmth and empathy.
  • Communicate clearly and encourage a child’s developing communication skills.
  • Stay calm under pressure and follow agreed support and safety plans.
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, the SENCO and other professionals.
  • Be committed to safeguarding and inclusive education.
  • Be available to start ASAP.

Experience supporting speech and language development or managing behaviour positively would be beneficial. Relevant training, including de-escalation or positive handling, would also be an advantage.
