About the role

A welcoming and inclusive school in Westminster is seeking a caring and dedicated 1:1 SEN Teaching Assistant to support a Year 1 child with their speech and language development.

This is a long-term opportunity for someone who is patient, nurturing and committed to helping children overcome barriers to learning. You will work closely with the class teacher, SENCO and wider support team to provide consistent, individualised support throughout the school day.

The successful candidate will be available to start ASAP.

Key responsibilities

• Provide dedicated 1:1 support to a Year 1 child.
• Help develop the pupil’s speech, language and communication skills.
• Support the child to engage with lessons, play and classroom activities.
• Use clear, patient and encouraging communication.
• Follow individual support strategies and recommendations from relevant professionals.
• Help the pupil build confidence, independence and positive relationships.
• Support transitions, routines and social interaction.
• Adapt activities and resources to meet the child’s needs.
• Monitor progress and share observations with the class teacher and SENCO.
• Work collaboratively with parents, carers, speech and language professionals and other staff.
• Promote positive behaviour and emotional wellbeing.
• Maintain high standards of safeguarding and confidentiality.

About you

The ideal candidate will have:

• Previous experience supporting children with SEN, speech and language needs or communication difficulties.
• Experience working with children in a primary, early years or educational setting.
• A calm, patient and nurturing approach.
• Strong communication and listening skills.
• The ability to build trusting relationships with children.
• Confidence supporting pupils on a 1:1 basis.
• A flexible and creative approach to adapting activities.
• Good teamwork and record-keeping skills.
• A commitment to inclusive education and safeguarding.

Experience with speech and language programmes, visual supports, communication strategies or working alongside speech and language therapists would be advantageous.
