About the role

A leading academy in Hertfordshire is seeking an ambitious and inspirational Head of Computer Science to lead its department.

This is a full-time, permanent position with a January start preferred. However, the academy is willing to wait until April for the right candidate. The successful applicant will lead the development of an engaging and ambitious Computer Science curriculum while supporting students to achieve excellent academic outcomes.

This opportunity would suit an experienced Computer Science teacher who is ready to take the next step into subject leadership, as well as an established middle leader seeking a new challenge.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and manage the Computer Science department.
• Develop and deliver a challenging, well-sequenced and engaging curriculum.
• Teach high-quality Computer Science and related computing lessons.
• Monitor student progress and use assessment data to improve outcomes.
• Support colleagues with planning, teaching strategies and resource development.
• Promote high standards of behaviour, achievement and digital literacy.
• Lead departmental improvement planning and contribute to whole-academy priorities.
• Develop schemes of work, assessments and curriculum resources.
• Organise and contribute to enrichment activities, clubs and competitions.
• Manage departmental resources and equipment effectively.
• Work collaboratively with colleagues, parents, carers and external partners.
• Promote equality, inclusion, safeguarding and student wellbeing.
• Contribute positively to the wider life and development of the academy.

About you

The successful candidate will have:

• Qualified Teacher Status or an equivalent recognised teaching qualification.
• A relevant degree or strong academic background in Computer Science, Computing or a related subject.
• Successful teaching experience in a secondary school or academy.
• Secure subject knowledge across Computer Science and the wider computing curriculum.
• Experience leading a subject, key stage or curriculum area, or clear potential to do so.
• A strong understanding of effective teaching, learning and assessment.
• The ability to inspire students and motivate colleagues.
• Excellent organisation, communication and leadership skills.
• A commitment to high expectations and inclusive education.
• The ability to use technology creatively to enhance teaching and learning.
• A commitment to safeguarding and promoting student welfare.

Experience delivering GCSE or A-level Computer Science, programming, computational thinking or digital technologies would be advantageous.
