About the role

An ambitious academy in Hertfordshire is seeking an inspirational and committed Head of Maths to lead its Mathematics department.

This is a full-time, permanent leadership opportunity with a start date of January or April, depending on the availability and experience of the successful candidate. The role would suit an experienced Maths teacher who is ready to take the next step in their career or an established middle leader seeking a new challenge.

You will provide strategic and day-to-day leadership for the department, helping to shape an ambitious, well-sequenced curriculum and ensuring consistently high standards of teaching, learning and achievement.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and manage the Mathematics department.
• Set a clear vision for curriculum, teaching, learning and assessment.
• Develop and maintain a coherent, ambitious and well-sequenced Maths curriculum.
• Teach high-quality Mathematics lessons across the relevant age and ability range.
• Monitor student progress and use assessment data to identify and address underachievement.
• Lead departmental improvement planning and contribute to the wider academy improvement plan.
• Support, develop and inspire members of the Maths team.
• Promote consistent approaches to planning, teaching, assessment, marking and feedback.
• Ensure schemes of work and resources are current, engaging and accessible to all learners.
• Lead effective departmental meetings and contribute to whole-school leadership discussions.
• Manage departmental resources and budget effectively.
• Promote high expectations for behaviour, achievement and student participation.
• Encourage enrichment opportunities that raise the profile of Mathematics.
• Work collaboratively with colleagues, parents, carers and external partners.
• Support the academy’s commitment to equality, safeguarding and student wellbeing.

About you

The successful candidate will have:

• Qualified Teacher Status or an equivalent recognised teaching qualification.
• A relevant degree or strong academic background in Mathematics.
• Successful teaching experience in a secondary school or academy.
• Secure subject knowledge and a passion for Mathematics education.
• Experience leading a subject, key stage or curriculum area, or clear readiness to do so.
• A strong understanding of effective teaching, learning and assessment.
• The ability to inspire students and motivate colleagues.
• Experience using data to monitor progress and improve outcomes.
• Excellent organisation, communication and leadership skills.
• High expectations of students and a commitment to inclusion.
• The ability to work strategically while maintaining a strong classroom presence.
• A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of young people.
