Reception 1:1 SEN Teaching Assistant

About the role

We are seeking a caring, patient and dedicated 1:1 SEN Teaching Assistant to support a Reception-aged child with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) at a welcoming primary school in Wandsworth.

This is a long-term opportunity starting ASAP, offering the chance to provide consistent, personalised support during a crucial stage of the child’s development. You will work closely with the class teacher, SENCO and wider support team to help the child access learning, manage routines and build confidence and independence.

Key responsibilities

• Provide dedicated 1:1 support throughout the school day.
• Help the child access the EYFS curriculum through adapted, play-based activities.
• Use visual supports, clear routines and structured communication strategies.
• Support transitions between lessons, activities and different areas of the school.
• Encourage communication, social interaction and independent learning.
• Help the child regulate emotions and manage sensory or environmental challenges.
• Promote positive behaviour using calm, consistent and nurturing strategies.
• Support participation during classroom activities, playtimes and lunchtime.
• Monitor progress and share observations with the class teacher and SENCO.
• Follow the child’s individual support plan and contribute to appropriate strategies.
• Promote safeguarding, inclusion and the child’s overall wellbeing.

About you

The successful candidate will have:

• A Level 3 qualification in Childcare, Early Years or a related discipline.
• Experience supporting children with ASD or other special educational needs.
• A calm, patient and empathetic approach.
• An understanding of autism, sensory needs and communication differences.
• The ability to build a trusting relationship with a young child.
• Strong communication and teamwork skills.
• The confidence to provide consistent, individualised support.
• A genuine commitment to helping children develop confidence and independence.

Experience working in a Reception, nursery, early years or specialist setting would be desirable.
