Training Provider Advisory Board Member / Non-Executive Director

Location: Bedford / remote
Commitment: 4 formal board meetings per year
Remuneration: £250 per meeting plus travel expenses

We are seeking an experienced and values-led Advisory Board Member / Non-Executive Director to help shape the future of our organisation and support our mission to advance adult STEM education across the United Kingdom. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute at board level to a purpose-driven organisation making a real impact for learners, employers and the wider STEM sector.

The Role

As a member of the Board, you will play a key strategic role in the governance, direction and oversight of the organisation. You will provide independent thought, constructive challenge and informed advice to support the Executive Team, while helping to ensure that we remain financially sustainable, transparent and focused on delivering excellent outcomes for learners.

The Board is responsible for the overall control and management of the organisation, with a focus on strategy, accountability, compliance and effective governance rather than day-to-day operations. You will help ensure that decisions are made in the best interests of learners and that we continue to meet the expectations of funders, regulators and stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

In this role, you will help the Board to:

  • Shape and agree the vision, strategy, ethos and policies
  • Support clear accountability between the Board, Chief Executive and management team.
  • Contribute to financial strategy, funding planning, sustainability and solvency.
  • Oversee teaching, training and learner outcomes through effective performance monitoring.
  • Champion equality, diversity, safeguarding and learner safety.
  • Provide assurance that public funds are used appropriately and transparently.
  • Review and strengthen governance arrangements and Board effectiveness.
  • Offer constructive challenge, independent insight and strategic support to the Executive Team.

What We’re Looking For

We are looking for someone who can bring independent thinking, sound judgement and a collaborative approach to board discussions. You will be able to balance support and challenge effectively, ask the right questions and contribute to strategic decision-making with professionalism and integrity.

You should ideally have experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Governance, non-executive leadership or board advisory work.
  • Education, skills, training or learner-focused services.
  • Finance, audit or risk management.
  • Equality, diversity and safeguarding.
  • Public, charitable or purpose-led organisations.
  • Strategic leadership or senior operational management.

Time Commitment

The expected commitment is:

  • 4 full Board meetings per year.
  • 2 meetings remotely and 2 at the HQ in Bedford.
  • Reading board papers in advance of each meeting.
  • Occasional support and advice to the Executive Team between meetings.
  • Active participation in debate, challenge and voting on matters arising.

We ask Board members to attend all meetings where possible, with no more than one non-attendance across the year. Board biographies and NED involvement will be published on the website and recorded in relevant company and governance documentation.

What We Offer

In return, we offer:

  • £250 per meeting, plus travel expenses.
  • Personal development opportunities.
  • The chance to contribute to a growing and ambitious organisation.
  • A professional and engaging board environment with meaningful strategic challenge.
  • The opportunity to act as a visible advocate for us and our mission.
