About the Role:
We are seeking an inspirational Head of History to join a dedicated and thriving team in a secondary school in Southwark, starting in September 2025. The successful candidate will lead the History department, fostering a passion for history and ensuring students receive a high-quality education that prepares them for both their GCSEs and further academic success.

The department follows the Edexcel GCSE syllabus at Key Stage 4, encouraging students to develop critical thinking and analytical skills while exploring both familiar and new historical periods.

Head of History responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage the History Department, ensuring high-quality teaching and learning across all key stages
  • Oversee the delivery of the Edexcel GCSE History syllabus and ensure students are fully prepared for their exams
  • Develop and implement an engaging curriculum, incorporating historical skills and attributes to help students explore a wide range of historical periods
  • Monitor student progress and performance, using data to inform teaching and interventions
  • Lead the department in continuous improvement, fostering a culture of collaboration and professional development
  • Take on TLR responsibilities, supporting the school’s leadership team and contributing to broader school-wide initiatives

 

Head of History requirements:

  • QTS (or equivalent) and significant experience in History education at secondary level
  • Proven leadership experience, ideally as a Head of Department or in a similar role
  • Expertise in teaching GCSE History, with a strong understanding of the Edexcel GCSE syllabus
  • Excellent communication, organisational, and management skills
  • A passion for History and a commitment to inspiring students to achieve their best
  • Ability to lead and develop a team of History teachers to improve student outcomes

 

GCSE History Information:

  • At Key Stage 4, students study the Edexcel GCSE History course
  • The course encourages students to draw on their historical skills and attributes to explore both familiar and new historical periods
  • Topic selections include a range of dynamic and engaging themes (specific topics and details are available in students’ learning resources each term)
