We are seeking to appoint an inspiring Head of Philosophy, Religion and Ethics (PRE), who will be both an excellent classroom teacher and have the ability to lead an experienced team successfully to ensure that all students make excellent progress.

The successful candidate will be a passionate advocate for Philosophy, Religion and Ethics, who is able to communicate their enthusiasm effectively to students, parents and colleagues and who constantly seeks to raise the profile of the department within the school.

Purpose:

 

At the heart of subject leadership is the provision of professional leadership to secure high quality teaching and learning, effective use of resources, the highest standards of achievement for all students and the promotion of students’ personal development and well being.  A Head of department must provide leadership and direction for the department and ensure that it is managed and organised to meet school and faculty aims and objectives.  A Head of department plays a key role in supporting, guiding and motivating teachers.  Heads of department evaluate the effectiveness of teaching and learning, the subject curriculum and progress towards targets for students and staff in order to inform future priorities for the department.  The policy and practice of monitoring within a department provides the information for evaluation and action.  A Head of department identifies needs in their department and recognises that these needs must be considered in relation to the overall needs of the school.  It is also important that a Head of department has an understanding of how their department contributes to school priorities and to the overall education and achievement of all students.

 

Qualifications:

  • Qualified Teacher with DfE number or evidence of successful completion of current course

Professional knowledge, experiences and abilities

  • Is a suitable person to be responsible for children and young people
  • Good knowledge and understanding of the Philosophy, Religion and Ethics curriculum
  • Excellent subject knowledge
  • Ability to deliver high quality teaching and learning in Philosophy, Religion and Ethics across the age and ability range
  • Ability to raise standards of attainment and aspiration
  • Good classroom management and commitment to positive behaviour management
  • An understanding of the use of ICT in Philosophy, Religion and Ethics teaching and learning and a willingness to develop its use
