Our school is a happy and vibrant school, home to a diverse international community of students and staff. A significant number of our students join the school from all over the world and are new to English or beginner to intermediate level. Our English as an Additional Language (EAL) team are dedicated to providing the support to students that they need to prepare them to move on to a full and rich curriculum of subjects once their language needs have been addressed.

We require a teacher of EAL to join our team. Students are taught a curriculum that focuses on their language acquisition between a term or up to a year in a full-time dedicated timetable. Once assessed to have made sufficient progress to be able to cope in mainstream classes they move to the next tier of EAL support until they are ready for full time mainstream lessons. The EAL teacher will be the full-time teacher of the dedicated beginner curriculum.

  • To assess students regularly in written and spoken English
  • To advise on the level of support students need at each stage of their transition journey towards full time mainstream and advise the EAL team on student progress towards the next level
  • To develop resources and materials for use across the EAL department
  • To mark and assess students and track their progress in accordance with the departmental monitoring cycle
  • To provide support to individual students
  • Monitor students’ progress in English acquisition through classobservations
  • To participate as appropriate in extra-curricular activities, including intervention and revision classes
  • To observe former EAL curriculum children in other mainstream classes as required

  • To liaise with the EAL coordinate and SENDCO as required
  • To support the pastoral care of students
  • To liaise with parents and attend scheduled welcome and information meetings with EAL families new to the school
  • To attend and participate in relevant meetings as required
